Facebook activates Safety Check feature for Kolkata flyover collapse

NEW DELHI: A part of the Vivekananda Road flyover, that was under construction, collapsed on Thursday in Kolkata leaving dozens trapped under the debris. Facebook promptly activated its Safety Check feature following the news of the incident where people can be marked safe by friends on Facebook in the affected area, thus assisting in accounting process.

The Safety Check feature by Facebook was initially used only for natural disasters. But during the Paris terror incident, Facebook for the first time activated it for a man made incident. Since then it has been repeatedly criticized for only turning on the feature selectively, and avoiding some attacks, especially in the developing world or not in the West.

In recent past Facebook has activated this feature during the Brussels attack and the Lahore bombings.
