Keeping up with its past track record of publishing open source code, Apple has released the Darwin code for macOS 10.12 Sierra.
For those who don’t know, Darwin is an open source Unix-like operating system from Apple. It’s made up of code written by Apple, and parts from BSD, NeXTSTEP, Mach, and other free software projects.
Darwin forms the core component of Apple’s macOS, iOS, watchOS, and tvOS operating system. It should be noted that the basic layers–kernel, BSD parts, drives–of Apple’s operating systems are derived from open source technologies.

While Apple has changed the name of its desktop operating system as macOS, the latest Darwin code release sticks with OS X 10.12.
Apart from this minor release, last year, Apple open sourced its Swift programming language. Since then, Swift has shown a tremendous growth and won over a large army of developers.
