We are going to get a slew of brand-new independent games very soon. Yes, the beginning of a new month is yet another opportunity to look ahead and discover some stunning independent games to play. This month is also pretty packed, so you won’t have to look very hard to find something to play. In fact, we’re going to do you a solid and find a bunch for you.
A list of some of the most intriguing and exciting independent games coming in May can be found here. It turns out that we have a lot of action coming up. Perhaps it is so that everyone can become “beach body ready” in their hands? We don’t really care why, but we’re excited to talk about the indie games this month, so let’s get started. Vellum – May 2nd The good news is that Vellum is a fantastic take on the roguelike action game that has been in Early Access for just over a year. You take control of ink-infused characters who can use magical spells to deal damage, much like in Risk of Rain 2, but with fewer levels and a meta-progression that is more focused and driven by the player. A quick tip: You can create some pretty amazing builds by combining those spells.
Bahamut and the Waqwaq Tree – 8th May
Compared to the other options on this list, Bahamut and the Waqwaw Tree is a little more laid-back. You can dive into an incredible underwater world that has been corrupted by darkness in this 2D adventure game, whose lore is all based on Arabian mythology. You’ll have to explore and save this realm if you want to stay alive, and oh, it all looks absolutely gorgeous.
May 8th, Empyreal Empyreal is a game full of mysteries. You find yourself on a strange planet inhabited by a group known as the Expedition. They are looking for a massive Monolith, a structure built by a lost civilization. You’ll need to fight your way through dungeons and navigate complex NPC quests and personalities to discover what’s going on.
May 8: Revenge of the Savage Planet Journey to the Savage Planet, published in 2020, is followed by Revenge of the Savage Planet, a deeply satirical and cynical take on exploration and capitalism. This time round, we have the luxury of co-op and provided the follow-up manages to master the same sense of humour and entertaining collectable gameplay, we’re certain it’ll be a blast. Plus, it’s a shot in the arm of pure colour, which can be nice these days.
Monster Train 2: May 21 If you haven’t played Monster Train, you are missing out on one of the best deck-building roguelikes ever made. The good news, though, is that Monster Train 2 is coming in May, and it’s looking to build on the original with more variety, some new clans to muck around with, and a few more modes thrown in for good measure. Expect great things from this one.
Blades of Fire – 22nd May
The action game Blades of Fire is similar to Souls in that you play as Aran de Lira as he tries to figure out and control his destiny. However, the fact that you can craft your weapons and keep upgrading them as you progress is the real draw here. We anticipate that this game will be a standout of the month and possibly the year as long as it does that well.
