Gadget helps lorries detect cyclists in Nottinghamshire

A haulage firm has invested in a new gadget which warns cyclists and pedestrians when a lorry is turning.

Taylor and Sons, in Huthwaite, Nottinghamshire, has spent £60,000 turning its 60-strong fleet into “talking lorries”.

Sensors send a signal to the cabin and a “traffic light system” will tell the driver how close the cyclist is.

Martin Key, from British Cycling, said while the technology could be helpful in the “short run”, it was not a “long term solution” in getting more people cycling and improving road safety.

He said the organisation recommends lorries with “better visibility” and drivers sitting lower down.
