Bop Design Reveals How Web Design Evolved in 2016

AN DIEGO, Dec. 13, 2016 /PRNewswire/ — The creative team at Bop Design, a B2B marketing agency, recently conducted an evaluation of thirty-eight company websites to see how web design evolved over the past year and shared their analysis, along with examples. In addition to examining recent changes affecting web design, the designers identified several trends that are rapidly fading in popularity and why these trends are disappearing.

Kara Jensen, creative principal at Bop Design, noted seven major changes that she and the design team have seen. “After all the projects we’ve worked on over the past year and what we are seeing out in the marketplace, we’ve singled out seven major, identifiable trends that have evolved in 2016,” said Jensen.

“To start, motion and movement are coming back into web design and digital marketing in general. It went out of style for quite a long time, since in the past, motion elements would cripple load times and site functionality, creating a poor user experience. That’s changed now with JQuery, HTML5, and CSS3,” she said. “Really cool things can now be achieved with motion and movement on digital assets. It’s great to see advancements that allow designers to bring these elements back in a way that creates an exciting user experience and contributes to the brand story.”

In addition to motion and movement making a comeback, Jensen noted that gradients are reappearing in new and interesting ways in all types of marketing materials. She also stated there has been a further expansion of white space and clean designs, shortened messaging, and a prioritization of usability over traditional SEO strategies for web design.

However, Jensen pointed out that while these innovative functionalities are trending in digital marketing, design for design’s sake is falling out of favor.

“Winning awards is great, but if the goals of the website aren’t met in the design, it’s a failure. Most websites can’t afford to just be beautiful – they need to fulfill a purpose and add value for the brand,” said Jensen.
