Apple’s iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 Add New Features

Describe brand-new software and hardware as the “best” or “biggest” ever, but the actual product rarely lives up to the hype (see the iPads of last year). iOS 18 and iPadOS 18, on the other hand, might be deserving of some of those adjectives. Apple Intelligence steals the spotlight, despite the operating system’s usual year-over-year quality-of-life improvements in the most recent version. This is how Apple has implemented tasks that are powered by artificial intelligence and have been sweeping the tech industry over the past few years.

According to Axios’ Ina Fried, it is powered by Apple’s large language models, which were partially trained using data from the public web. It requires Apple silicon, which are custom chips made by the company with a hybrid architecture made for AI tasks. Apple Intelligence runs on devices that are capable of the on-device processing required to complete AI tasks; however, there are times when the task is too large and must be sent to the cloud. When a task requires more processing, it’ll be sent to a secure data center stacked with computers that also run Apple silicon. Apple claims that its Private Cloud Compute platform focuses on ensuring data privacy for each user, despite the fact that this method of computing is typically less private. Only data relevant to your query is sent to these servers, and the data is only used for your requests and never stored.Throughout Apple’s hardware and software, you’ll find new writing tools that draw on the power of generative AI to assist your writing. This includes Rewrite, which can assist you in adjusting the tone of your text to make it sound friendlier or more professional (for example, in an email), and Proofread, which basically does what its name implies. Additionally, you can tap to summarize selected text. These enhancements based on text go beyond writing. Priority notifications, which appear at the top of your notification list and provide a summary that is easier to understand at a glance, are also powered by it. You can turn the feature on by going to Settings > Notifications> Prioritize Notifications. In a similar vein, the Mail app lets you set priority for messages, which means that important emails will appear first in your inbox. You can also get summaries of long emails, and a Smart Reply feature, similar to what’s in Gmail, lets you respond quickly to emails, even to multiple questions in one email.
