You could sense the consternation in the air among the boxing fraternity who had begrudgingly descended on Las Vegas.
Ahead of Floyd Mayweather’s farewell pay packet win over Conor McGregor, the purists were more than a little miffed to be involved in any shape or form with this spectacle.
They accepted that they had to be in Vegas for what was destined to be the biggest grossing bout of all time. But boy, they didn’t like it.
Even after McGregor produced a surprisingly competitive performance and snapped back Mayweather’s head on a couple of occasions during the opening two rounds, it was dismissed as a flash-in-the-pan. The former five-weight world champion was ‘of course’ merely toying with the UFC fighter.
But even the most diehard boxing fan couldn’t deny the public’s thirst for the encounter, which, after all, largely took place because of the interest in a ‘dream fight’. A staggering haul of 4.5million pay-per-view buys in the US alone equalled big, big money.
No-one expects this weekend’s middleweight title bout between Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin and Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez to do anywhere near those numbers, even if – unlike the Mayweather-McGregor encounter – all the seats inside Vegas’ T Mobile Arena have been sold.
