iPhone X Screen 'Temporarily Unresponsive' in Cold Weather for Some Users, Apple to Fix With Software Update

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Some iPhone X users reported the issue
  • Phones in extreme cold conditions are likely to be affected
  • Apple promises an update to fix the issue

Some iPhone X users have complained about their smartphone’s screen not responding in cold weather. Apple has now acknowledged the issue and promised a software update for iPhone X users.

The issue was first reported by a Reddit user who complained that his iPhone X screen stopped responding to touch inputs. In a Reddit thread he wrote, “I’ve noticed that my iPhone X screen becomes very unresponsive as soon as I step outside. It literally takes 2 seconds from going inside to the cold outdoors and my screen stops being very responsive. I try swiping on websites and it doesn’t register my finger. It’s very noticeable. Is anyone else having this problem?” The problem, however, is not very common, and very few users have so far have identical issues which may mean that iPhone X units in very cold condition may be facing this issue.

Apple took no time in identifying the issue and told The Loop, “We are aware of instances where the iPhone X screen will become temporarily unresponsive to touch after a rapid change to a cold environment. After several seconds the screen will become fully responsive again. This will be addressed in an upcoming software update.”

Apple does suggest suitable temperature condition for its iOS device for optimum performance. In its support page, Apple notes, “Use iOS devices where the ambient temperature is between 0-degrees and 35-degees Celsius (32-degrees to 95-degrees Fahrenheit). Low- or high-temperature conditions might cause the device to change its behaviour to regulate its temperature. Using an iOS device in very cold conditions outside of its operating range might temporarily shorten battery life and could cause the device to turn off. Battery life will return to normal when you bring the device back to higher ambient temperatures.”

We can expect a software update for the iPhone X soon considering Apple appears to have already started working on the issue.
